Dear Representative Kleinschmidt. I am writing to ask that you consider sponsoring a bill that would allow individuals in community college taxing districts to opt out of the that particular taxing district. The reason I ask this is that Bastrop County is being targeted for inclusion into the Austin Community College tax district. The issues with ACC are many--poor completion rates, low student attendance, high administrative costs and poor reputation.

This has become a divisive issue in our community. There are those of us who do not want any additional taxes in the current economic environment and there are those who have the spend at all costs mentality. I would suggest that a reasonable alternative to this is to allow individuals, to opt out of the district. This would be that those of us who opted out would have to pay higher costs if we, or our children chose to attend ACC. At the same time it would allow those who want to attend ACC receive lower tuition rates.

Sincerely,

Van Henry
